MS Vista Setup

Top  Previous  Next

MS Vista setup is almost identical to XP setup, so we recommend that you follow all instructions in the Basic Setup Guide MD and the IE OS Setup Guide. there is however, one additional step for vista users that must be followed.

Vista attempts to prevent MS Word documents from opening within the browser window. This is by design. Due to customer feedback, Vista issued a "workaround" (seen below). Scribe has field tested this solution and found it to work well. If you have any difficulties with the instructions, please contact Microsoft Help.

Excerpted from Microsoft Word Help:

A new window opens when you try to view a 2007 Microsoft Office program document in Windows Internet Explorer 7

To view this page online paste the following link into your browser bar: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927009 , but please read the "Additional Note" below.

ADDITIONAL NOTE! The online instructions found in the link above are missing one important piece of information. The instructions ask you to create a regedit script file in Notepad. Some Vista users have reported to us that they DO NOT have Notepad on their computers, only Wordpad. The regedit file CAN be created and used successfully in Wordpad, but ONLY if the following steps are completed when saving the file.

1. After the script is pasted into Wordpad, click "File>Save as" and save the file to your desktop as a Text Document type (see below ) NOT AS A .RTF file (rich text format).

2. The system will warn you that all formatting will be lost.  Click Yes to save with all formatting lost (.rtf documents have additional hidden format coding which will prevent the regedit file from running properly).

3. All other instructions on the online page are correct.

Saving the file to your desktop makes re-installation of the regedit file later very easy (you will need to re-install it periodically. Microsoft updates often remove these sort of registry changes, as an attempt to keep your registry functioning optimally)...just double-click the file to run the script anytime you find MS Word opening outside the browser in Scribe.

save regedit file in wordpad as text doc

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a Microsoft Office Word 2007 document, a Microsoft Office Excel 2007 document, or a Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 document in Windows Internet Explorer 7, the document may not open in the same window as Internet Explorer. Instead, a new Word 2007, Excel 2007, or PowerPoint 2007 window opens to display the document.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. The 2007 Microsoft Office system intentionally does not set a BrowserFlags registry key for its file types. This behavior keeps 2007 Office files from opening inside same window as Internet Explorer.

Certain editing features are available only when the document is open outside the Web browser. Additionally, the Office Ribbon may not work as expected in Internet Explorer. Also, security enhancements to Windows Internet Explorer 7 running on Windows Vista make opening the document outside the low-integrity context of Internet Explorer (when running in protected mode) better for overall security and usability.

WORKAROUND

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Note For applications that require Office files to open inside the Web browser window, use the following workaround. However, this Internet Explorer feature may not exist in future operating systems that are later than Windows Vista.

If you have an existing application that requires the old behavior, you can modify the registry to allow the 2007 Office system files to open in Internet Explorer. We encourage you to do this only if the situation requires it. If you make these changes, all users of the computer will be affected.

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:

1.

Start Notepad. (If Notepad is not available, you may use Wordpad, BUT the document MUST be saved as a TEXT document, not as a Rich Text Format (.rtf) file. See Below)

2.

Copy and then paste the following text to Notepad:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Word.Document.8] "BrowserFlags"=dword:80000024 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Word.RTF.8] "BrowserFlags"=dword:80000024 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Word.Document.12] "BrowserFlags"=dword:80000024 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Word.DocumentMacroEnabled.12] "BrowserFlags"=dword:80000024 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Excel.Sheet.8] "BrowserFlags"=dword:80000A00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Excel.Sheet.12] "BrowserFlags"=dword:80000A00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Excel.SheetMacroEnabled.12] "BrowserFlags"=dword:80000A00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Excel.SheetBinaryMacroEnabled.12] "BrowserFlags"=dword:80000A00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PowerPoint.Show.8] "BrowserFlags"=dword:800000A0 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PowerPoint.Show.12] "BrowserFlags"=dword:800000A0 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PowerPoint.ShowMacroEnabled.12] "BrowserFlags"=dword:800000A0 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PowerPoint.SlideShow.8] "BrowserFlags"=dword:800000A0 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PowerPoint.SlideShow.12] "BrowserFlags"=dword:800000A0 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PowerPoint.SlideShowMacroEnabled.12] "BrowserFlags"=dword:800000A0

3.

If the document was created in Notepad, save the Registry Edit file to your Desktop as FileName.reg., then close out of all other programs.  Continue on to # 4.

If the document was created in Wordpad, click "File>Save as" and save as a Text Document type (see below ) NOT AS A .RTF file (rich text format). The system will warn you that all formatting will be lost.  Click Yes to save with all formatting lost .

Note: Saving the file to your desktop makes re-installation of the regedit file later very easy (Microsoft updates often remove these sort of registry changes, as an attempt to keep your registry functioning optimally). Instructions for re-running the file at a later time can be found in RE-running the MS Vista regedit file.

4.

Double-click FileName.reg to run this registry script.

5.

Start Internet Explorer 7.

Log into Scribe and open a file. The document should now open within the Scribe browser.

Keep the Registry Edit file on your computer. In the event that Microsoft updates roll back these registry changes, you can simply close out of all programs and double click the file again to restore the settings.
